Making the Holidays Bright: Reducing Stress & Finding Joy
by Brenda McSween | Parenting

Ah, the holiday season! Malls are buzzing, kids are bouncing off the walls with excitement, and parents are juggling festive magic with their already-packed schedules. For many, it’s marketed as “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” but let’s be real—sometimes, it feels like the most overwhelming. Throw in long distances from family, and feelings of isolation can creep in too. My heart races just thinking about it!
But here’s the good news: the holidays can be more joyful and less stressful with a little perspective shift and planning.
How to Turn Holiday Stress into Holiday Cheer
1. Lower the Bar & Embrace Imperfection
Let go of the “perfect holiday” myth. Who defines perfect anyway? Spoiler alert: you do. So, why not give yourself a break and lower that bar? This year, instead of aiming for perfection, focus on how much holiday spirit you can handle. If it’s a cozy night with cocoa and a movie instead of an elaborate dinner party, that’s perfect enough.
2. Schedule Nothing Time
Yes, nothing! Block out downtime and protect it fiercely. It’s tempting to fill every open slot with festive activities, but everyone needs moments to decompress. Whether it’s lounging in pajamas or letting the kids play at their own pace, this downtime helps you recharge and makes everything else feel more manageable.
3. Play, Laugh & Just Have Fun
Remember, the holidays should be fun! Take a cue from my dad—Christmas Day was always about joy and play. Our family laughed, played games, and enjoyed simple moments together. Those are the memories that stick. So, build snowmen, dance to holiday music, and laugh until your sides hurt.
4. Be Ready for Anything
Stock up on essentials: batteries, snacks, and quick meals. Remove frustrating packaging from toys before the big day so kids can dive right in. Got a little one who feels overwhelmed in busy or unfamiliar places? Use familiar calming techniques or plan ahead for quiet moments. Avoiding a “hangry” family meltdown is worth the prep!
5. Pack Extra Patience
Patience is your holiday superpower. Whether you’re in a long line or stuck in traffic, deep breaths can be a lifesaver. I’m that person in line breathing deeply and staying calm. Why? Because when I’m calm, my little one picks up on it. This holiday, I’m adding extra time to our outings so we can soak in the lights and magic at our own pace.
